Farmers improve productivity, resilience with RAMP

An “engaging and rewarding” program developed by Southern Cross University has helped farmers improve their sustainability, productivity and resilience.

The Regenerative Agriculture Mentoring Program (RAMP) connects small groups of farmers with trusted agriculture experts to build their knowledge and networks. Farmers participate in regular group sessions, and have access to a workbook, webinars, fact sheets, case studies and other valuable resources.

Program Manager, Dr Simone Blom, said the RAMP vision was to create resilience through regenerative agriculture education-based, group mentoring.

“Mentoring, which partners an expert mentor in regenerative agriculture with local farmers in regional hubs, is the best mechanism to achieve this vision,” she said.

“Farmers learn best from other farmers and knowledgeable, respected service providers, such as extension officers, agronomists, field service staff, training companies and practitioners. Having industry leading mentors is key to a successful program.”

With the third RAMP cohort nearing the end of their program, farmers have reflected on their journey.

“It was a thought-provoking experience and a catalyst for many changes and improvements in my land management and relationship practices. The relationships and knowledge gained are re-invigorating my mindset within my current context,” one participant said.

“Agriculture can be so isolating … RAMP’s group mentoring model was very beneficial to all involved. It facilitates a new work of professional peers to engage and learn with,” another said.

Other farmers said the program “created a supportive and nurturing environment” and was a great way to connect to “like-minded people all striving to do better in their own ways”.

A podcast series will be available in the near future. Resources created through RAMP are also available on the website: www.ramp.org.au

This round of RAMP was funded by the NSW Government through its Environmental Trust.
